Early this morning a semi-truck drove off of Interstate 94 in Jackson County, Michigan, striking a pylon on a bridge. Luckily, no one was injured in the truck accident. Accidents involving semi-trucks frequently cause catastrophic injuries, which is why truck drivers and the trucking industry are subjected to state and federal regulations.
When truck accidents do occur, driver fatigue, improper maintenance or unbalanced cargo is sometimes to blame, among other factors. Those who are hurt in truck accidents are often wise to talk to a truck accident attorney as soon as possible to learn about their rights to obtain compensation and hold the truck company accountable if necessary.
In the truck accident that took place at about 2:50 a.m. today in Grass Lake Township, the truck driver reportedly drove the truck off of the roadway after reaching down to pick up something that had fallen onto the floor of the cab.
He drove off of the road, struck a guardrail, and continued driving between the guardrail and a bank before finally striking a pylon supporting the Clear Lake Road bridge, according to an MLive.com report.
The tractor-trailer was empty at the time of the accident.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office reported that the driver was cited for careless driving.
The bridge did not appear to be damaged in the accident, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
An accident like this could have resulted in terrible consequences. It is a reminder of the serious responsibility that semi-truck drivers have to ensure that their trucks do not put others in harm's way.
